Sad fact: I went into a library recently (last year) to take a photo like this! I asked where the card catalogue was, and they gave me blank looks… After which I had to go into a long, awkward explanation of cards that had details of the books, and you pull them out to see what their catalogue number is to go find it…… Finally one of the librarian clued in and said they didn’t have those anymore. I as heartbroken. Not because I needed the photo, but more because I hadn’t even considered they might be extinct… Like no kids will ever learn about the Dewey decimal system again. They’ll just type in a keyword or author… Sigh!

I can’t believe they hadn’t heard of card catalogues! It’s amazing how fast things fade from the public consciousness. It doesn’t take long before modern technology becomes the norm – I was watching Argo last night and shocked into memories of old telephones (without voice mail, even!).

I think the worst is cassette tapes. I had a little Fisher Price cassette player when I was little, and I was thinking about getting one for my cousin’s kid… And then I realized… Maybe they don’t make them anymore…. And if they did… Where would she get cassettes???

Ugh. Does this mean toddlers now get mini CD players or something? I feel out of touch!
